Students from the Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School Division, and Rocky View Schools recently participated in
Level Up Calgary: Achievement Unlocked, a Minecraft Education design challenge. This challenge offered all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 an opportunity to submit their creative designs, built in a customized Minecraft world depicting downtown Calgary. While navigating the digital world, students were able to choose from 4 different prominent Calgary sites to provide a design concept that reimagined public spaces, reflect vibrancy and sustainability, while making a direct connection to one or more of three noted resiliencies: economic, social and climate.
Each student submission was reviewed by a panel of community experts, and The City of Calgary hosted an online student awards ceremony on June 14, 2023. Students and educators from Emily Follensbee School, a specialized CBE school that provides educational programs for students attending Kindergarten to Grade 8 with complex learning needs, submitted an exceptional collaborative design that received the Inclusive Excellence Award, a special recognition by Calgary’s Mayor, Jyoti Gondek and CBE’s Chief Superintendent of Schools, Christopher Usih.
The
Emily Follensbee submission featured student concepts built on 3rd street SE, outside of Calgary Central Public Library. This site’s challenge was for students to design a flexible, inclusive multi-use outdoor space that promotes literacy, fosters curiosity and unleashes creativity, and the Emily Follensbee student submission delivered just that.
