Message from the Board of Trustees on Government Policy Announcement

Feb. 01, 2024

We are committed to ensuring each and every student feels welcomed, cared for, respected and safe while at school, no matter who they are or how they identify. This is consistent with our legal obligations under the provincial Education Act and the Alberta Human Rights Act.

CBE values are clear that students come first, learning is our central purpose and public education serves the common good.

We believe public education is a shared responsibility. With students, parents, employees and our communities, we work together every day to build positive learning environments for student success. Parents and guardians play a critical role in the education and lives of their children, and teachers work closely with them to ensure their child succeeds.

We are waiting for more information from the province to fully understand the impact of these changes. The Calgary Board of Education was not consulted about this policy direction.

It will be important for the government to meaningfully engage with school boards on policy and curriculum changes that affect students in classrooms. In the meantime, we remain confident in the ability of CBE staff to work collaboratively with families to ensure that each child has the opportunity to thrive at school.
