Sept. 30 marks Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Sept. 30 is a non-operational day for employees and a non-instructional day for students.
This year, we are drawing inspiration from Kainai Blackfoot Elder Casey Eagle Speaker, who recently asked CBE staff, “What is something you can do?” This question reminds us that each of us plays a role in Truth and Reconciliation.
CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to attend a public commemorative event being hosted by the City of Calgary in friendship with CBE and Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) this year’s theme is ‘Remembering the Children’, in alignment with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s Truth and Reconciliation Week.
This year's gathering will include in-person speakers and performers, a live stream broadcast, to honour victims of residential schools, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The event will include an intertribal dance demonstration from CBE and CCSD students. More information on the event is available on the
City’s website and in the invitation below. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
