Re-entry Update for Families | August 6, 2020

Aug. 06, 2020

We wanted to provide an update on our re-entry plans as we continue to refine the details of how we will return to in-person classes under Scenario 1 next month.

If you haven’t had a chance, please review our re-entry plan that includes a variety of measures to keep students and staff safe. We will continue to update this plan as new information and updates are available.

Mask Use for School Staff and Students in Grades 4-12

On Aug. 4, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced an update to provincial school re-entry guidelines. All school staff and students in Grades 4 to 12 will be required to wear masks where physical distancing cannot be maintained, including on school buses. In schools, this will include common areas such as hallways and public spaces, as well as classrooms where physical distancing cannot be maintained. The province has stated that exemptions will be made for students and staff who are unable to wear a mask due to medical or other needs. At this time, mask use for students in kindergarten to Grade 3 is optional.

The province will provide all students and staff with two reusable cloth masks. Details about how these will be distributed are being determined and we will provide an update once we know more information. Families may also consider purchasing additional masks for their children.

We will provide further details regarding mask use in schools next week.

Registration for Hub Online Learning Starts Next Week

For families who are uncomfortable returning to in-person learning we are offering a hub online learning approach for students in Grades 1-12. This approach is a combination of online instruction and independent work and requires a significant commitment from students and parents.

Registration will be open from Wednesday, Aug. 12 until 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24. We will work with families to accommodate all who register for this option. It is important for families to understand that this approach will not offer the same opportunities or supports as in-person learning.

Watch for an email next week with more information and registration details to help you make the best decision for your family.
